How to Clean Stuffed Animals: Fun Activity to Do With Kids

Stuffed animals might seem like they are hard to keep clean, but it can actually be a fun activity toddlers and preschool children will love to help you with. Afterall, there’s plenty of fun in giving all their stuffed animals a bath with real water and soap. Best of all, it doesn’t make too bad of a mess with the right supplies and preparation. While many might be tempted to just wash them in the washing machine, it’s way more fun to do it the old fashioned way.

First things first, you will need a waterproof pad like the kind many hospitals and care places use. If you don’t have one already, they can be found inexpensively at Amazon like the Priva Ultra Plus Waterproof Sheet Protector. If you don’t have one already, they are a great thing to have for a number of uses. In this case, it’ll protect your floor so you can use a plastic washtub or bin as your bath tub the kids can reach easily.

For the actual bath tub, you’ll want to use something that will fit the stuffed animal you will be washing, such as a small dishpan which you can usually pick up for a few dollars at your local retail chain. If you still have a baby bath tub that works well too!

Once you have the basics, it’s just a matter of filling up the tub with some warm soapy water (a few drops of dish detergent or baby shampoo works fine) and then letting your child soak the plush animal thoroughly. Old toothbrushes work great for kids to scrub with or you can use a loofah or washcloth if you’d like instead.

Once your stuffed animals are clean and have been nicely washed by the kids, you’ll want to change out the soapy water with clean water and make sure all the soap is out of the plush so it doesn’t attract dirt. Then wring them carefully to get as much water as possible out. Hand drying with a towel can help too. We then let our bears set out in the sun on warm days or if inside next to a fan to blow dry.

Here’s A couple of More Tips for Cleaning Stuffed Animals:

Check the Manufacturer Label First! Some animals should not be washed, so it’s very important to make sure that you read the label or tag attached to the plush toy. You don’t want to accidentally ruin your child’s favorite stuffed toy! Most will specify whether you will need to hand wash or whether it can be machine washed instead.

Check for Batteries/Removeable Parts: If a stuffed plush animal plays music and sounds or has batteries or lights, it probably is best to not wash it or submerse in water. Instead, contact the manufacturer and inquire about washing/care instructions.

Supervise Small Children: Kids and water can get out of control quickly – always watch what they are doing to make sure that your children don’t end up tipping over the dishpan or dump water everywhere.

Don’t use the Dryer: It can be really tempting to throw your stuffed animals in the dryer after washing, but this can potentially lead to melted parts especially if any part of the animal is plastic, such as eyes or nose. Hair dryers are a bad idea too – they can pose the threat of burning or causing fire.

Bathing stuffed animals might seem like a chore for some, but for many kids this is a really fun activity that will keep them occupied during the day, help them feel some responsibility and “grown up” and will help their stuffed toys be nice and clean too. In fact, this activity for kids is one that can quickly become a favorite part of the child’s weekly routine!

How to Choose Safe Toys for Children

In a perfect world, all toys would be safe and we’d never have to worry about buying a toy and it potentially hurting our children. But sadly, that is just not the case, and so to help parents, and grandparents, and anyone else who may be purchasing toys for children, we have made a guide here to share with you on how to choose toys that are safe for kids.

Made in USA Only: American made toys don’t have lead. By buying USA only, you also help support our economy by supporting American workers to have employment. You also help discourage the use of manufacturers which force children to work in unsafe conditions in other parts of the world.

No Hazardous Chemicals Please: We like toys made out of wood the most, but only if they are treated with non-toxic paints and stains. Many times paints or stains can have hazardous materials which can make seemingly safe toys become dangerous. Plastic can also contain toxic materials, such as BPA. Children put toys in their mouths, at any age.

Don’t Trust Packaging: “Non-Toxic” does not mean safe. It means it will not kill you instantly upon contact. “All Natural” does not mean safe either.

Do Your Research: Research what manufacturers have a strong belief in providing safe, non-toxic toys for kids. Look up organic toys and research product safety recalls, parent’s reviews (both good AND bad) and everything else about a toy before you buy something.

No Batteries Required: Batteries are dangerous. They are especially dangerous to have in kids toys, where they may be accidentally ingested or caused to break and leak. My two year old is pretty handy with a screw driver – don’t trust that the batteries will not be taken out by them. Kids also enjoy immersing their toys in water. This is not good for batteries.

Nothing too Noisy: If you follow the rule of no batteries required, no need to worry. You can give my children toys that make noise or music if it meets all other requirements. But please do not give them something that you step on in the middle of the night that starts singing some sort of loud song that when you finally have gotten the child to sleep wakes them up instantly.

Something Sturdy: Kids have a natural instinct to be curious and to explore. This means they are destructive. Nothing is worse than someone giving a child a gift they like that breaks and cannot be repaired. The child may cry and scream for hours relentlessly. That does not make for happy kids or happy parents.

Choose Age Appropriate Toys: Not only do you want to make sure the toy is appropriate for the child it is intended for, but you should also try to make sure it is appropriate for the age of the youngest child in the household as well. Many toys that are given to my eight year old for example, get into the hands of my two year old. Avoid small pieces when possible.

Toys can be a lot of fun. By following these guidelines for choosing safe toys for children, you can help prevent kids getting hurt by poor manufacturing decisions.

Make Your Own Hair Dye With Homemade Hair Dye Recipes

With all of the dangerous chemicals and warnings on traditional hair dye kits, not to mention the high price of the kits, it’s no wonder that many people are looking for ways to make their own homemade hair dye. You can often get salon quality looks without putting your life at risk, or draining your wallet.

One of the main factors in choosing which homemade hair dye recipes to use is the shade of your natural hair color. Those who have very light hair will find it easy to darken it naturally, and those with darker shades can often lighten it without too much trouble. Experimenting on a test swatch of hair like pictured right is a great way to know exactly what color you will be getting without committing to it.

Natural Ways to Lighten Hair

If you are a brunette or have darker hair, there are many home remedies to lighten hair you can try. Lemon juice remains to be one of the most popular options, and with a few lemons costing less than a couple of dollars, it is certainly affordable.

When using a lemon juice treatment, you will want to first wash your hair as normal, and then squeeze out the lemon juice from the lemons. (Roll the lemons first on a flat surface to make juicing them easier!) Then apply to lemon juice to your entire head just as you would as a shampoo or conditioner, or choose specific areas that you would like to highlight.

Many people will mix different things with the lemon juice, such as Chamomile tea, rhubarb, or even honey. These are all different options to consider. To expedite the process and to get more dramatic results, it is best to go into direct sunlight for at least 30 minutes – just make sure you wear sunscreen! Be careful if you get any lemon juice on your skin, as this may cause it to burn more quickly.

Natural Ways to Darken Hair

For natural ways to darken your hair, using organic henna remains one of the most popular options. Henna is often used for tattoos and you should be able to find it in many natural stores and specialty shops near you, or you of course can usually find a very good price ordering it online. For example, Nupur Henna 100% Natural Powder is only $3.99 and will give you plenty of henna. Most recommend mixing it with either lemon juice or water and allowing it to sit anywhere from 6-12 hours until it forms into a paste you can apply thickly to the hair. It is usually a good idea to do a test patch to get the shade you want. For some it can cause the hair to turn bright red, so make sure you test first!

Tea bags and coffee are other ways to stain the hair a darker shade. Simply brew coffee or tea as you normally would, making it a very strong concentration. Then massage into your hair and allow it to sit as long as you can stand it before rinsing it out. (An hour at minimum, but longer will give you more noticeable results).

Homemade Dyes for Red Hair

If you want to make your hair a red or auburn color, you will need to find natural products that have a red or orange tint to them.

A mixture of beet juice and carrot juice is one of the most popular choices to try, and it is easy to mix the two together and apply and let it set for one hour before rinsing.

You can also find flowers such as marigolds, hibiscus flowers, and others that can produce nice results. You will want to pick the flowers and crush the petals and then boil them down in water until it takes on the color you want. After the water has cooled down to room temperature, apply to your hair and allow it to set for 15-20 minutes, or longer if necessary.

Making your own all natural hair dyes is a lot of fun, and you’ll be happy to know that they don’t include any dangerous chemicals or toxins. Remember to always do a test patch on your skin and your hair before proceeding, especially if using a new method you’ve never tried before. While allergic reactions are unlikely when using common everyday things such as lemons and carrots, flowers may cause irritation for some. It’s better to test and be sure than to have an allergic reaction!

Tips for Staying Cool

With summer coming in and the weather heating up, everyone is looking for some fun and unique tips for staying cool. Even if you have air conditioning, the heat can still sometimes put a damper on your plans, so we’ve decided to come up with a list of our favorite things to do to beat the summer heat.

Go Swimming: Nothing cools you off like a nice day of swimming. Whether you have your own pool, become friendly with the neighbors who do, head to the local community pool or jump in a lake – you can’t help but instantly feel better as soon as you take a swim. But remember: wear sunscreen or this tip could make things worse!

Wear Light Colored Clothing & Hats: Dark fabrics such as black, brown, red, purple, and navy blue all attract and absorb the heat from the sun. Lighter colors such as white and most pastels will help you reflect the sun’s rays and help you stay cooler. It also helps to wear all cotton clothing, as it helps with staying cool also.

Drink Lots of Liquids: When the weather is hot, it’s very easy to become dehydrated quickly. Stay away from caffeinated or high sugar content drinks, since they will actually increase your thirst and instead opt for good old water. You could also try making some of your favorite summer time cool drink recipes, like some fresh squeezed lemonade.

Use Fans: Even with air conditioning, fans will always help you cool off as they help circulate the air even more. The bigger and more powerful the fan the better, though expect there will also be more noise associated with those types. The Lasko 20-Inch Cyclone Pivot Fan is probably our favorite – and it works so well we don’t care how noisy it is! Clicking the picture below will let you read the reviews on it.

Visit the Library: Most libraries are air conditioned, so going there during the hottest part of the day is a great way to cool off and dive into a great new book. Check to see what types of summer programs or activities they have for the kids, and you might even be able to take a nice break!

Turn off the Lights & Unused Appliances: Lights, computers, and televisions all add heat to a room – so by turning them off you can avoid overheating. Needless to say, it’s also not a good idea to cook or bake on very hot days. Microwaves are preferred to conventional ovens as they can do not produce any heat.

Insulate Properly: If you are running the air conditioning, you’ll want to make sure that your home is properly sealed to keep the cold air in. The same measures you take in the winter can help keep the cold air inside.

Stay in the Shade: If you must be outdoors, avoid being in the direct sun when possible – if you are, be sure to wear sunblock. If you don’t have a lot of shade over your home or yard, consider planting trees that will do that in the years to come.

Eat Something Cold: Ice cream, popsicles, gelatos, and all of our other favorite frozen treats can help you cool down. Make your own popsicles with juice or consider getting an ice cream maker and it can also be inexpensive and a fun way to entertain the kids!

Take a Shower: Taking a shower with cool water will help you feel cooler and stay refreshed. The sprinklers in the yard can work just as well.

Use Cold Compresses: A wet wash cloth or towel can be a nice soothing way to stay refreshed. You can also place the towel in the freezer if you’d like.

The summer heat doesn’t have to be unbearable. What tips for staying cool in the summer do you have to share?

Creative Ways to Give Money as Gifts

If you want to give someone money as a gift, but want it to stand out as something memorable or special, there are many creative ways to give money as gifts. Whether it’s the holidays, a birthday, or some other special occasion, when you put some thought into how you give money, it becomes a lot more personal and special than it would if you just tossed a couple of bucks into a card. Many people especially like to find creative ways to present money as a gift in settings where many people chip in together to give them something, such as students for a teacher or coworkers for someone they work with.

The first thing to do is to consider what the occasion may be. For example, if you are attending a baby shower, and not really interested in buying anything from the baby gift registry, then one idea would be to take a diaper, place the money inside the diaper, attach a note to it that says “Baby diapers are full of surprises” and then wrap or give it to the person, that is a cute and fun way to give the gift. Obviously this would not work for say a grad student or a Christmas present however, so that’s why we’ve decided to come up with a few other ideas and tips that will help get your creativity moving.

The Money Tree: This is one of the best gifts I ever got – and it’s simple to do! All you need is a miniature tree (or you can even just use a tree branch in a flower pot) and then tie bills and coins onto it with ribbons. If it is near the holidays, you can usually find inexpensive small Christmas trees.

Clothesline: Just about any craft store offers little mini clothespins, so all you need is a package of those, a small basket, and a piece of rope. Then, all you do is attach the money to the rope with the pins and then fold it up to go into the basket.

Small Bills: If you want to give someone a unique gift, consider using smaller bills, such as single dollars, and then stuff them into a decorative jar or place them in a mini book.

Animals With Backpacks: It’s not too hard to find small stuffed animals with backpacks, so another creative thing to do is find one of these and then place the money into the backpack.

A Wallet: If you ever give someone a wallet as a gift, it’s an unspoken rule that it’s really extra nice to place a little money in it, too! You could also do this with a small purse.

In a Book: If you have a favorite book you think the person will like, you can always tape the money into one of the pages inside.

Calendar: A calendar is another good alternative for a card to give cash – just tape the bills or coins to the different pages.

In a Bar of Soap: If you’re someone who likes to make soap, you can place coins in the silicone soap molds and then make them a few bars of soap!

Origami: If you are good with origami or paper folding, another fun thing to do is shape the dollar bills into different things and then place them into a box and wrap the box. You can make rings, bracelets, animals, cars, etc. etc. – the possibilities really are endless for this one!

Miniatures: Maybe the person you are giving the gift to is saving up to buy a house or a car or maybe even a new computer. If this is the case, simply buy a miniature of this item, such as a toy car or a key and affix the money to that with a small personal note.

Clue Hunt: If you have the ability to do this, it can be fun to send someone on a hunt for the money! You can either do it like a treasure hunt with a treasure map and a treasure chest, or do it something like an Easter egg hunt. Either way it can be a lot of fun to finally find it!

Cold Hard Cash: All you need is a container, a waterproof plastic bag, and a freezer to wrap the money in the bag and then fill it and the container with water and freeze it!

Self Counting Piggy Bank: Anyone who’s ever had a lot of loose change can know what a pain it is to count all of it! You can get an Electronic Money Jar that will count all that loose change, and you can give them some loose change so they can have fun adding it all up in the jar!

Favorite Food: If the person you are shopping for has a favorite food, you can wrap $1 or $5 bills around each of the items as well, which makes it an extra sweet treat!

These are just a few ideas, but I’m sure they’ll help get your creativity flowing for different ways to give money as a gift! Have any ideas you’d like to share? Tell us about them in the comments below!

Basic Baby Proofing Tips for Your Home

Giving a safe haven to our children is our responsibility and while there may be people who wonder why these things are required since they are recent inventions, being safe than sorry is always a better idea. The fact is that those who belong to the old school of thought think that children were brought up earlier too without the aid of these baby proofing products and therefore they can be brought up in the same manner even now.

However, what they fail to understand is that times have changed and there are far more dangerous products that can be found in a home than earlier. In addition to that it is not possible to run around the house behind the child all the time ensuring that he does not get into trouble. If you want some peace of mind and want to be able to sit for a while knowing that your baby is safe, baby proofing is a must. While comprehensive baby proofing can be planned keeping the specific requirements of your home, some aspects of baby proofing that you must consider are provided below.

Childproofing the Staircases

If you do not live in an apartment and have a home, ensuring that your staircases are gated is very important. You will need to ensure that every landing in the house has a staircase gate that has a baby proof latch. In most cases, you will be able to assemble these staircase gates on your own. Do not hesitate to get a custom made one if that is a requirement for your home. Check out the various latches that are available. There are those that have latches at the bottom and can be operated with the foot, something that can be very helpful if you are alone at home and are carrying the baby and some other stuff too and have both hands full.

Safety In the Kitchen

The kitchen is a place that needs baby proofing with care. The task of baby proofing the kitchen is so large that sometimes parents leave out the area completely and just ensure that there is a gate that does not allow the baby to enter the kitchen area. In some homes, however, that is not possible because of the structure. And then again, you are likely to be spending a fair amount of time in the kitchen and therefore may want your child to be playing close to you rather than in another room.

To baby proof your kitchen, ensure that each and every cabinet that is at the low level is latched properly using a baby proof latch. In addition to that latch the cabinet beneath the sink that is used to keep trash in too even if this causes some inconvenience. You do not want your kid rummaging in the trash. This cabinet also tends to contain dishwashing liquid and cleaning agents and therefore keeping it closed is a essential thing to do.

Bathroom Safety

Bathrooms can be slippery when it comes to baby proofing. Make sure that you have anti-skid products that you use in the bath and the floor to keep the baby from slipping. Make sure that you never leave the baby alone in a bath that has water. Even a small amount of water is enough to drown your baby.

Safety Around the Home

Make a small play area for your child that has minimal furniture and padded carpet so that he can play while you watch television or catch up on some work. This will also give you some space when you need to take a break from the hectic schedule.

Color by Numbers Printables for Kids

There are a lot of different activities that are great for kids to learn their colors and numbers. Probably one of the favorite ways for a lot of kids is to use color by number printables for kids, which is why we decided to show you how you can easily make your own. While I love printables for kids as much as the next person, the cost of paper and ink can really add up if you’re not careful, which is why a great alternative is to learn how to make your own by reusing the coloring books you already have at home.

Color by numbers are usually like any other page in the coloring book, except they have numbers that coordinate with a color in the white spaces of the picture. For example, the number 1 could be the color blue, the number 2 the color orange, the number 3 the color yellow, number 4 the color green, number 5 the color purple, and it goes on and on and on.

These types of activities are great for teaching kids everything from recognizing numbers and colors to learning how to color things to be more realistic.

If your child already has a coloring book, then you don’t really need any printables because you can easily do this on your own using the ones you likely have just sitting around somewhere.

To convert one of your coloring books into a colors by number book, here are the materials you will need:

A black or dark gray colored pencil
An Index Card
Blue Crayon
Red Crayon
Green Crayon
Orange Crayon
Yellow Crayon
Red Crayon
Purple Crayon
Brown Crayon

Now, all you need to do is on the index card, write the numbers 1 through 8, with 4 on each side. Then, take the corresponding color and color in a little box beside it. If your children are older, you may want to spell out the color and then have them take the right color and color own its spelled name so they’ll have something to use for quick and easy reference.

The next step is to go about converting the pages in your coloring books with the numbers. Using the black or dark gray colored pencil, determine which things in the picture should be blue, and then write the corresponding number in that space. Do this until you have gone through all the numbers and colors and there are no empty spaces to color in left.

Once you’ve converted the book, the next thing you’ll want to do is to show your child how to use it! Your kids will love this simple and easy activity, and you’ll be glad you didn’t waste valuable printer ink or paper by reusing the old coloring books you already have!

What is the Best Dog Breed for Children?

We love our pets. But it’s also important that when you have kids you take some time and research what the best dog breed for children is, too. Some breeds do better with kids than others, and getting the right type that suits your lifestyles and the needs of your family will help make sure you’re all happy with the choice you made. It’s not just a matter of protecting your children (though that should be your #1 priority of course!) – you will also want to make sure the dog is safe and happy as well!

The first thing to do is ask yourself this:

Is your family really ready for a pet?

Depending on the ages of your children, you may want to consider if it will add stress to your lifestyle or not.  A dog should not be taken lightly – and it will be yet another person in your family who needs fed and potty trained and attention. All dog breeds need exercise and food and love, and so you have to be sure that you can give your pet those things.

When discussing pets as a family, here are some things to consider:

How Much Time Do You Have? Most of us don’t have a lot of time. But, pets deserve time just like any other member of the family does. If most of the family is away from the house during the day for school or work, what will you do? Hire a pet sitter? Schedule someone to come home?

Are You Active? Even the calmest of dogs need exercise in order to prevent a lot of common pet discipline problems. Taking your dog for a walk or to play in the park are just as important as check ups with the vet.

Does Your Budget Allow for It? Pets, just like kids, are not cheap. An average vet bill can be several hundreds of dollars, if not thousands. You’ll also have to consider purchases such as bedding, collars, food, toys, treats, and more. Some will argue money shouldn’t matter, but if you’re already on a tight budget, you may want to consider saving a little first.

Now that you’ve answered those three questions clearly and you’ve decided that yes, you can give a pet an excellent home, you are then ready to start considering which breeds are best for children.

Should You Consider Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds For Children?:

Many people are allergic to pet dander, so you may want to consider a hypoallergenic breed if that may be an issue your kids. Kid allergies can lead to a lot of sinus problems or ear infections, or even behavioral problems (weird, but true! My son goes nuts anytime he is around a cat!), so it’s important to consider this before committing to a pet for a lifetime – you won’t want your kids to be heart broken that their pet has to go away because it makes them sneeze and have problems breathing! Good options for this include Poodles, Labradoodles, Lagotto Romagnolo breeds, Bichon Frisé (this was my husband’s first dog), Coton de Tulear, Bergamasco, and Irish Water Spaniels.

What are Other Breeds to Consider?

If you are certain that allergies are not an issue with your family, then you have many more options in addition to the great puppies listed above. Beagles, Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, and Labradors are all popular “family dogs”. One of the best dogs we ever had was a German Shepherd/Yellow Lab/Beagle Mix – but shedding was an issue! Mixed breeds can sometimes be nice, but you’ll want to make sure you carefully research the different breeds to make sure each individual one is okay and so you know what you may expect.

What Size Dog Is Best With Kids?

With kids, it will greatly depends on the size and personality of your kids in choosing what size of pet to get. For example, if your children are big and active, they could accidentally hurt very small pets. On the other hand, if you have toddlers, you may not want an extremely large dog because they are also huge and could easily knock a child down by accident.

What Age Should the Dog/Puppy Be?

Many people wonder if they should get a dog or a puppy with kids. Puppies are often best for a family with active kids because it will allow for the dog to grow up with the children, and so many issues can be avoided that you can sometimes get with older dogs who may not be used to children. It will greatly depend on the breed, and what the animal’s past history has been. Obviously, even the best of breeds may not be a good choice if the dog has a history of abuse or is temperamental.

Frugal Fashionista Tips

Are you a frugal fashionista on a budget? These days everyone is trying to save money in any possible way they can, which unfortunately for many means spending less on new clothing.  If you love fashion and designer prices but are on a budget, then you’ll love our frugal fashionista tips below:

1. Clean Out Your Closet & Clothes:  If you love clothing, then there’s a good chance you already have quite the selection in your closet but may have forgotten about what you already own. The best bet for organizing your clothes is to first drag it all out and then lay it out in piles where you can see everything. You might just be surprised how much you have and what new combinations you can make. Set a special pile for clothes that no longer fit you or you don’t really wear too much anymore.

2. Organize a Clothing Swap: Organizing a clothing swap can not only be a great free way to update your look but also can be a lot of fun to do as well. Invite up to as many friends as you’d like and tell them to bring a bagful of clothes they no longer wear. Then lay it all out on a pile and let everyone fight for what they want. (Hopefully there really won’t actually be any fighting!) You may want to set a few ground rules such as all trades final. If you find that there are leftover clothes, you can always donate the to thrift stores or charities near you.

3. Choose Solid Basics: The cliche of the little black dress remains true: having a few solid anchor pieces can greatly stretch any wardrobe. Rather than buying all new clothes, consider having just a few basics that can be dramatically changed just by a few accessories.

4. Look for Designer Trends in Cheaper Clothing: If you look at what styles you like, the prices of high end designer items can be daunting. However, many times you can find comparable items and styles shopping at most discount retail stores. Nobody is going to realize or notice that what you’re wearing isn’t the name brand designer label.

5. Thrift Shopping is Cool: A lot of people roll their eyes at thrift shopping or second hand and consignment stores, but there is a lot to be gained by going to these types of stores. Often times you can find the designer labels if you have the patience to look – you can also almost always find something that imitates the style as well.

6. Set a Spending Limit: It’s important that you set a spending limit if you want to save money when shopping for clothes. Try to stretch the dollar as far as you possibly can – you can either buy one pair of jeans for $48 or you can go to a discount or thrift store and get 5 or 6 items for the same price. Keeping a budget will help you make sure that you are getting value.

7. Avoid the Temptation of a Sale If something regularly $159 is on clearance for $79 it sounds like a great sale, doesn’t it? However, tempting as it may be, think about how else that money could be spent or if you could find something similar somewhere else for less. If you’re spending money, you’re not really saving it.

8. Read the Care Labels: Clothes that require dry cleaning, steam cleaning, or other special care can cost you money in the long run, or you may even not wear it that often because it does require special care and that extra effort in keeping it clean. If something can be washed in the washing machine instead that can save you much more than taking it to the dry cleaners.
