Stuffed animals might seem like they are hard to keep clean, but it can actually be a fun activity toddlers and preschool children will love to help you with. Afterall, there’s plenty of fun in giving all their stuffed animals a bath with real water and soap. Best of all, it doesn’t make too bad of a mess with the right supplies and preparation. While many might be tempted to just wash them in the washing machine, it’s way more fun to do it the old fashioned way.
First things first, you will need a waterproof pad like the kind many hospitals and care places use. If you don’t have one already, they can be found inexpensively at Amazon like the Priva Ultra Plus Waterproof Sheet Protector. If you don’t have one already, they are a great thing to have for a number of uses. In this case, it’ll protect your floor so you can use a plastic washtub or bin as your bath tub the kids can reach easily.
For the actual bath tub, you’ll want to use something that will fit the stuffed animal you will be washing, such as a small dishpan which you can usually pick up for a few dollars at your local retail chain. If you still have a baby bath tub that works well too!
Once you have the basics, it’s just a matter of filling up the tub with some warm soapy water (a few drops of dish detergent or baby shampoo works fine) and then letting your child soak the plush animal thoroughly. Old toothbrushes work great for kids to scrub with or you can use a loofah or washcloth if you’d like instead.
Once your stuffed animals are clean and have been nicely washed by the kids, you’ll want to change out the soapy water with clean water and make sure all the soap is out of the plush so it doesn’t attract dirt. Then wring them carefully to get as much water as possible out. Hand drying with a towel can help too. We then let our bears set out in the sun on warm days or if inside next to a fan to blow dry.
Here’s A couple of More Tips for Cleaning Stuffed Animals:
Check the Manufacturer Label First! Some animals should not be washed, so it’s very important to make sure that you read the label or tag attached to the plush toy. You don’t want to accidentally ruin your child’s favorite stuffed toy! Most will specify whether you will need to hand wash or whether it can be machine washed instead.
Check for Batteries/Removeable Parts: If a stuffed plush animal plays music and sounds or has batteries or lights, it probably is best to not wash it or submerse in water. Instead, contact the manufacturer and inquire about washing/care instructions.
Supervise Small Children: Kids and water can get out of control quickly – always watch what they are doing to make sure that your children don’t end up tipping over the dishpan or dump water everywhere.
Don’t use the Dryer: It can be really tempting to throw your stuffed animals in the dryer after washing, but this can potentially lead to melted parts especially if any part of the animal is plastic, such as eyes or nose. Hair dryers are a bad idea too – they can pose the threat of burning or causing fire.
Bathing stuffed animals might seem like a chore for some, but for many kids this is a really fun activity that will keep them occupied during the day, help them feel some responsibility and “grown up” and will help their stuffed toys be nice and clean too. In fact, this activity for kids is one that can quickly become a favorite part of the child’s weekly routine!
